SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION MEGHALAYA, NEWSLETTER

25th July, 2002 (CTI-BYR): The Passing Out Ceremony of the 3rd Batch Short Term Training Course on Integrated Watershed Management and Development Approach conducted by the Conservation Training Institute, Byrnihat, Meghalaya was held on the 25th July, 2002. About 12 Nos. participants from different sponsoring authorities viz.,. Soil and Water Conservation Department. (Meghalaya); Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council; Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council; Agriculture Deptt (Irrigation) Meghalaya and Agriculture Department (Nagaland) successfully completed the Training Course. The training course dwelt on the need to have an all round development of watersheds with emphasis on public participation. Shri D.S Kharsyntiew, Head of the Institute distributed the certificates.

13th September, 2002 (CTI-BYR) : With the aim to increase manpower development in the field of management of natural resources particularly at the field level the Conservation Training Institute of Meghalaya, Byrnihat once again conducted the 11 months Field Assistant Course. The Passing Out Ceremony of the 29th Batch Field Assistant Trainees was held on the 13th September, 2002.

Shri P.W. Ingty, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Soil Conservation, Meghalaya handed over a certificate to a trainee on completion of the training.

Altogether 20 trainees successfully completed the course. The trainees are deputed by Soil and Water Conservation Department; Meghalaya, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council; the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. Shri Salmen M. Marak of the Soil and Water Conservation Department, Meghalaya secured the first position with honours and was adjudged the best Trainee. The other trainees who passed with Honours are Shri Nehru Washington Blah, Shri Nikseng Ch. Marak and Shri Jopki Jeffrey Siangbood.

The Ceremony was graced by Shri P.W. Ingty, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Soil Conservation, Meghalaya as the Chief Guest. The other Speakers in the occasion included Shri K.L. Tariang, Director of Soil & Water Conservation, Meghalaya & Shri H. Bora, Jt. Director of Soil Conservation, Assam. The vote of thanks was offered by Shri K.C. Momin, Additional Director of Soil Conservation, Meghalaya.

Launching of Website of The Soil and Water Conservation Department, Meghalaya

The Website of the Soil and Water Conservation, Meghalaya, Shillong was launched on the 19th November, 2002 by the Hon’ble Minister of Soil Conservation, Shri Sanbor Swell Lyngdoh in the auditorium of the Soil Conservation Office, Polo Hills, Shillong With the launching of the website the Soil and Water Conservation Department of Meghalaya is now in the the international mainstream. The hon’ble Minister lauded the Officers of the Department for the endeavour and expressed confidence that the website will be of great help to the people at large in understanding the functions of the Department and its different activities. Shri P.W Ingty, I.A.S Commissioner and Secretary, Soil and Water Conservation Department presided over the function. Shri K.L. Tariang. Director, Soil and Water Conservation gave the introduction and the welcome address.

Shri Sanbor Swell Lyngdoh, Minister of Soil Conservation launched the website of Soil and Water Conservation Department, Meghalaya.

Celebration of Year of the Farmer at Lamin Village, Jaintia Hills

30th July, 2002 (DSCO-J:CC): The office of the Jowai Soil Conservation Division (Cash Crop) celebrated the year of farmer by conducting Farmer’s Training cum Distribution of seedlings at Lamin Village on the 30th July, 2002. Officers of the Department imparted the Training to the farmers with various improved methods of raising, planting and management of Arecanut Plantation.

The Training Programme was attended by about 50 selected Arecanut growers from Sohkha and Lamin village along with their Headmen. About 7500 Arecanut Seedlings were distributed to the participants.

September, 2002 (DSCO-SIM) : The Simsanggre Soil Conservation Division distributed 47,392 Nos. of Arecanut Seedlings to 392 benefited families of the scheme control of Shifting Cultivation Areas Macro-management Projects for Rongro, Imjenggip and Gasil Chise Watersheds.
